MUSEUMS The best orientation to the city, its history and flavor is the Albuquerque Museum, located on the edge of the Old Town historical district and just across the street from one of the state's newest museums, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History. A few miles away, on 12th Street, just north of Interstate 40, is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. It combines an excellent overview of the different Rio Grande Indian pueblos with an Indian crafts shop, Indian style restaurant, and an official state information center offering guides and brochures on attractions of all kinds. Indian dances are held on weekends. The University of New Mexico offers the internationally respected Maxwell Museum of Anthropology, the Geology and Meteoritic Museums and the University Art Museum. The National Atomic Museum, on the grounds of Kirtland Air Force Base, examines nuclear power in all of its forms, from the top-secret Manhattan Project that developed the atomic bomb in New Mexico, to peaceful uses of nuclear and other alternative energy sources. An hour's drive north on Interstate 25 is well worth the effort, to see Santa Fe's cluster of outstanding museums: the Laboratory of Anthropology, the new Museum of Indian Arts and Culture, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of International Folk Art.
