SCHOOLS

The Public School System covers first through 12th grades with special facilities for physically and mentally challenged children. There are kindergartens in some elementary school attendance areas. High schools are accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and offer both academic and vocational-technical courses. There is also a community college, non- credit program at the university.

The school term usually begins the last week of August and ends the last week in May. A child must be six years of age before September 1 to enter first grade (five years of age for kindergarten), and must have legal proof of age, a physical examination, and inoculations for polio, dyptheria, tetanus, and measles (rubella and rubeola). Books are loaned free to all students. All schools have cafeteria service, and transportation is furnished to elementary students living over two miles from school.

Private schools include nursery schools and kindergartens, Catholic and Protestant day and boarding schools, the U.S. Indian School, Albuquerque Academy (coed), Sandia School (coed), and Menaul School (coed). The University of New Mexico is a nationally accredited college, with an enrollment of 24,100 in 1986. Extension Colleges include University of Phoenix, Webster College, and National Business College; all offering day and evening classes. Technical-Vocational Institute (TVI) is city-owned and provides specialized training in technical field at 525 Buena Vista Drive SE, and the Joseph M. Montoya Branch at Montgomery and Moon NE.
