TODAY Getting Around Town Get the latest information on The
Big-I Project! The city is divided into four quadrants: NW, SW, SE, NE. The north-south boundary is Central Avenue while the east-west boundary is I-25. The NW area offers a variety of homes in a more rural atmosphere; in addition, there are several strongly developing subdivisions in the area referred to as the West Mesa. The SW is a mixture of commercial and older rural neighborhoods. It is in both "Valley" areas that horses and light farming are most popular. The SE section provides a mix of older, both large and small homes, often preferred by University related residents, and is close to Kirtland Air Force Base. The NE is by far the most popular quadrant of the city and offers a wide variety of homes, both in style and price range, also the most complete shopping facilities, and the largest new developments. The area on the east side of the Sandias will appeal to those who like a rural lifestyle in a mountain setting. Driving time from Point A to Point B in the city is usually not more than 25 minutes from wherever you put the points. A nine-year upgrade project to Interstate 40 was recently started, however it is not bumper to bumper, stop and go driving, like other metropolitan areas. The population of the metropolitan area is approximately 480,000 people. Get the
